What occurs when your health and wellness guidance originates from a deceiver?

Inspired by a true story built on falsehood, Apple Cider Vinegar features Kaitlyn Dever as Belle Gibson, an Australian wellness influencer who asserts she cured her terminal brain cancer through health and wellness. Seems improbable? That’s because it is. In reality, Belle was never diagnosed with — nor did she cure — the malignant brain tumor she discusses on social media, the mobile app she creates, and its accompanying cookbook.

Developed by award-winning Australian writer Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers, The End, Dance Academy), who resided in Melbourne during the height of Gibson's real-life success, this six-episode limited series acts as a cultural exploration of the era. It delves into the emergence of Instagram, the appeal and rise of wellness culture, the peak of girl boss start-up culture, and the age of innocence on social media with minimal oversight.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar about?

Set in the early days of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who aim to heal their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities in the process — if only it were true. As we now know, it's often difficult to discern what's real and what's not on social media, even with the most serious topics. “It’s really interesting to look at how media uses food as a weapon against us and how much we crave the nourishment, but how much of a privilege and how expensive it is to try to be well,” said Strauss.
