What To Watch Wednesday: "Griselda" Starring Sofía Vergara!

Your next true crime watch is here! Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization shows Griselda Blanco's journey from Medellín to becoming "the Godmother" of Miami's drug empire.

"Griselda" is a six-part Netflix series that tells the story of the rise to power of a notorious Colombian drug trafficker in the 70s and 80s. Created and co-written by Vergara with veteran showrunner and executive producer Eric Newman (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico, and more), the show follows Blanco's life after she and her family left Colombia and established a business in Miami. Blanco dominated the male-dominated, illegal drug market in southern Florida, and was known for her violence, committing and ordering dozens of murders throughout her life, and for inspiring respect, if not admiration, from her rivals. Shot in art deco nightclubs and mid-century Miami neighborhoods, the show is populated by characters based on a list of infamous 1980s criminals. Speaking to T&C a few weeks before the release of Griselda, Newman discussed the origins of the show and how close he and his collaborators were to the true story of Griselda.

Sofia's Role as Griselda Blanco

Nicknamed the Black Widow or the Cocaine Godmother, Griselda Blanco was a prominent Colombian drug lord from the 1970s to the early 2000s. She was a key figure in establishing the cocaine trade between Colombia and cities such as New York and Miami. A devoted mother, she rises through the ranks of this male-dominated crime ring, but at great personal cost.

This will mark Vergara’s first major dramatic role. She’s best known for starring in ABC’s “Modern Family” as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, a role that netted her four Emmy nominations.

"Griselda" airs tomorrow Thursday, January 25, 2023, on Netflix. Mark your calendars!
